At DarkHorse IT, we’re always looking for ways to make technology more useful, approachable, and just plain easier for everyone. One of the best-kept secrets? The amazing accessibility features that are already built into the devices we use every day—no extra downloads or purchases required.
These tools aren’t just for those with disabilities—they can benefit anyone who wants to get more done, more easily. Here are four accessibility tips—one each for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS—that can simplify your digital life.
🖥️ Windows: Use Your Voice with Dictation
Tired of typing? Try talking instead! Windows has a built-in dictation feature that lets you speak and see your words appear on the screen in real-time.
How to Use It:
- Click into any text field (like an email or document).
- Press
Windows + H
on your keyboard. - Start speaking!
If you’re on a laptop, you already have a mic. If you’re using a desktop, check if your webcam has one built in—or plug in an external mic.
🍏 Mac: Enable Dictation for Hands-Free Typing
Mac users can join the voice-to-text party too! Dictation on macOS is a simple way to type by speaking.
How to Turn It On:
- Go to System Settings > Keyboard.
- Find the Dictation section and turn it On.
- Set your preferred shortcut (like pressing
Control
twice).
Now, just use that shortcut whenever you want to start dictating. Super handy for emails, notes, and even long documents!
📱 iOS: One-Handed Typing Made Easy
Ever tried texting with one hand on a big iPhone? It’s not fun. Luckily, iOS has a feature to shrink your keyboard and move it to one side—perfect for one-handed use.
How to Do It:
- Open the keyboard.
- Tap and hold the globe or emoji key.
- Choose the left- or right-handed keyboard icon.
To go back to normal, just tap the arrow on the side of the keyboard.
🤖 Android: Shrink That Keyboard with One-Handed Mode
Android users aren’t left out—Gboard (Google’s keyboard) has a one-handed mode built right in.
Try This:
- Open Gboard in any app.
- Tap the menu icon (three dots).
- Select One-handed mode.
The keyboard will scoot to the side. Tap the arrow to switch sides, or expand it back to normal with a single tap.
At DarkHorse IT, we love showing people how to get more out of their tech—whether it’s speeding up your workday, making communication easier, or just making your device feel more comfortable to use.
