This week on KFGO, we took a different approach to IT advice—rapid-fire Q&A with Jeff Carney, the owner of DarkHorse IT. Jeff answered some of the most frequently asked questions from our audience, offering his insights and opinions. While the on-air answers were short and sweet, we’re diving deeper into each question right here on our blog. Let’s get started!
1. iPhone or Android?
Jeff’s choice: iPhone
While I have both iPhone and Android devices, I prefer the iPhone for its user experience and design and security. Historically, Apple has done a better job maintaining a secure ecosystem, although neither platform is perfect. iPhones tend to be more reliable, even at the lower-end price points, compared to budget Android devices. At the end of the day, my daily phone is an iPhone.
2. Windows or Mac?
Jeff’s choice: Windows
While I appreciate the backend design and security of macOS, Windows dominates the business world and is what I use daily. I’ve owned older MacBooks and loved their operating systems but haven’t upgraded recently. I’m also a fan of Linux distributions like Ubuntu, especially for repurposing older machines that can’t upgrade to Windows 11.
3. How many computers do you have?
Jeff’s setup includes five computers:
- Custom-Built PC: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 48GB RAM, multiple SSDs, and large external drives.
- Ubuntu Linux Server: i7 11th Gen processor, 32GB RAM, with a 4TB internal drive for storage.
- HP Refurbished Desktop: i5-8500 CPU, 256GB SSD for primary storage.
- Acer Laptop: 11th Gen i5, 16GB RAM for portability.
- Data Recovery & Transfer PC: i5 5th Gen, 16GB RAM, with a 4TB external drive.

6. Favorite Social Media?
Jeff’s choice: TikTok
TikTok’s algorithm is unmatched. It delivers content based on what you enjoy, making it easy for anyone with good content to be seen by the masses. It’s also a fantastic platform for learning and entertainment, offering more positivity than many other platforms.
7. Do You Prefer Desktops or Laptops?
Jeff’s preference: Desktops
Desktops offer versatility, easy upgrades, and customization. I love the multiple monitors, full-size keyboard, and ability to add additional storage. While laptops are great for portability, I prefer a desktop for serious work.
8. Best Secure Communications App?
Jeff’s pick: Signal
Signal is the gold standard for secure communications. Its open-source protocol is widely used in other secure services. It even incorporates quantum-safe cryptography, adding an extra layer of security. The company is ethical and won an award for communications privacy, making it my go-to app.
9. How Many Backups Do You Have?
I follow the 3-2-1 Backup Rule:
- 3 copies of your data
- 2 different storage mediums (e.g., local and external)
- 1 offsite backup (e.g., cloud storage)
This strategy ensures your data is safe even in catastrophic situations.
10. Console or PC Gaming?
Jeff’s choice: Console
I don’t game often, but when I do, it’s on my Nintendo Switch. Mario Kart is my favorite!
11. Favorite AI Model?
